Safari Overview
Extended Machame adds an acclimatization day at Karanga for higher success (~85-90%). More time to enjoy scenery, better adaptation. Popular for its variety and views.
Detailed Itinerary
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After registration at Machame Gate (1,800m), start your climb through dense montane rainforest. The trail is shaded and often muddy, with mossy trees and giant ferns all around. Your guide keeps a steady “pole pole” pace while you learn the basics of altitude trekking and hydration. Arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m) in the late afternoon for your first mountain sunset and a warm dinner. Distance: ~11km, Time: 5–7 hours, Elevation gain: ~1,200m.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Climb steadily out of the forest and into heather and moorland. As the air thins, the landscape opens up and Kibo (the summit cone) starts to appear when clouds clear. You’ll traverse onto the Shira Plateau — a high volcanic caldera — and reach Shira Camp (3,840m). An optional acclimatization walk helps your body adjust. Distance: ~5–7km, Time: 4–6 hours, Elevation gain: ~840m.
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Today is your key acclimatization day: “climb high, sleep low.” Trek across alpine terrain up to Lava Tower (4,630m) where you’ll pause for lunch and feel the altitude. After the break, descend into the Barranco Valley to Barranco Camp (3,950m), one of the most scenic camps on the mountain, set beneath the Barranco Wall and surrounded by giant senecios. Distance: ~10km, Time: 6–8 hours, Elevation: +790m / -680m.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin with the famous Barranco Wall — a fun, hands-on scramble (not technical climbing) with fantastic views from the top. Then traverse ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp (3,995m). Because the day is shorter, it’s ideal for rest, hydration, and a gentle acclimatization walk after lunch. Distance: ~5–6km, Time: 4–5 hours.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Climb steadily to Barafu Camp (4,600m), your summit base camp. After arrival, rest, hydrate, and organize summit gear with your guide. Expect an early dinner and a very early bedtime — the summit push begins around midnight. Distance: ~4km, Time: 3–4 hours, Elevation gain: ~605m.
Summit Day: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Summit day starts around midnight. Trek slowly up steep scree to Stella Point (5,756m), then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — ideally reaching near sunrise. After photos, descend back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) in the rainforest zone. This is the longest and most demanding day; your guide’s pacing is key. Distance: ~17km, Time: 11–15 hours, Elevation: +1,295m / -2,795m.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,650m). Sign out, receive your summit certificate, and meet your transfer back to Moshi/Arusha. Hot showers and a proper meal are well-earned after the climb. Distance: ~10km, Time: 3–4 hours, Elevation loss: ~1,450m.
